PLANNING: ANCILLARY TASK 1 - THE DIGIPAK

Image result for Chris Brown's F.A.M.E. album.1. Are there any particular CD covers that you remember? For what reason do you remember these?

Yes, there are certain CD covers that I remember such as Chris Brown's F.A.M.E. album.
The reason this album cover is one that I remember is because of the colours, pictures and use of writing which is involved. The colours are vibrant, bright and well noticeable which helps the packaging stand out from those album cases which may be darker toned. I think the fact that Chris Browns face is in the centre of the album cover also helps me remember it because it makes me remember who he is for starters and then which songs are on the album. I think it also helps that I remember this album cover, because I really like the music which was on this album.

Image result for One Direction – Up all nightAnother album cover I remember is One Direction – Up all night. One reason could be because it was their first ever album which was made once the X-Factor had stopped. So, everyone would have heard about it and it was all over the media. I think it is an important part of what should be included in an album cover is an image of the characters which are used in the music video or the actual artists themselves because that shows an involvement of what you will be seeing in the music video itself.

WE ALSO DID SOME RESEARCH INTO THE HISTORY OF ALBUM COVERS AND FOUND SOME INTERESTING STUFF, INCLUDING HOW THE BEATLES CHANGED THE GAME. THE YOUTUBE VIDEO BELOW EXPLAINS IT:

2. How important is the cover of a CD to you buying it? Why?
I think the album cover is very important because it may convince people to buy the CD, depending on how it looks. It should be presentable and look aesthetically pleasing because if it wasn’t well put together it may put off people from buying it, mainly because it's not well presented and neatly organised. When I say aesthetically pleasing, I mean, well put together, parts fit together (so the writing doesn’t look out of place to the picture that you use etc.) but also the image and artwork be attractive and simple.

3. In your opinion what makes a good CD cover? Does it need to stand out on the shelf?
In my opinion, I think that a colourful, bright album cover does attract me more and would make me want to buy it more rather than a dull and sombre one which doesn’t stand out on the shelf. However, it all depends on the music which is in the album. If I the music was slow love songs then I would expect the packaged album cover to be of the same tone.

4. How much space should the act name and track name take up?
I feel like most of the album cover should be a picture of the actual artists themselves, the characters used in the artists music video, or a piece of artwork used across the artists medium (ie. social media, album, website). This then means the artists name/song title would only cover a small proportion of the square. However, there are several examples where it's only the artists name or a blank canvas with the song title, so I guess it depends on the music entirely.

5. Should the cover image be of the act or a piece of design/art work? Does this depend on whether the act is a soloist or as part of a group/band?
Personally, i think it looks much better when it is a piece of design/artwork rather than the artists picture because it adds a little something different. Also, I think that it doesn't matter whether it's a soloist or part of a group/band because the artwork has nothing to do with that.

6. Should there be a common theme across the 4 panels or 4 individual images?
In my opinion, I feel as though there should be a strong theme throughout all 4 of the panels which are used for the Digipak because then it shows links and it is easily recognisable as that specific artist. If they were all different, it wouldn’t make much sense. Therefore, yes it should be all in the same theme.

7. What should be included on the inside and back panel?
On the inside of a Digipak there should be included a bit about the artists themselves, like a few facts about how they became famous or how they made the album. Then there should probably be some pictures of the artists which is in a photoshoot format. This is a good thing because it helps make the readers/ audience familiarise themselves with the artists, which can then bring them closer to the music they listen to.

8. Do you like to see the lyrics included?
I like to see the lyrics included inside the CD, but I don't think it's a necessary part of the digipak because there are many successful examples, which didn't include it. However, it normally nice to see and follow the lyrics, especially for a younger audience.

9. Should the act's social media accounts appear on the digipak somewhere?
I think in this day and age, where almost everything is done by social media, especially the advertising and marketing of bands and their music. So, it may be a good idea to have the social media accounts on the digipak, so fans can follow them, but I also think that if they were interested in buying their music, they may already follow their social media. In any case, on the back, it could be a good idea to have the accounts names.

10. Should the images included have some link to the name of track(s), genre of music, name of act etc?
If the artists themselves have curated and helped made the plan for the digipak, then it's up to them if the images included have some link to the name of track(s), genre of music, name of act etc. In turn, fans then would like to see something the artist(s) like and therefore, it doesn't matter what the images are, only if the artist themselves like them.

11. Is the choice of colour, size and font of the written text important?
In my opinion, it is important because it can’t be too over-powering or it doesn’t go with the picture or pattern in the background. I think it's got be simple because then it's more likely to be powerful with one sentiment, rather than lots. But it also has to catch someone's eye in the store, and almost be brave to simplify it to let the music be better and speak for its self.
