Post 1: Practice Task Explained

POST ONE: OUR PRACTICE TASK EXPLAINED

To start the year off, we were given our practice task; To make a practice music video. My group
were randomly given a fairy tale or nursery rhyme, and a question. We can use these as stimulus to
create our practice music video. The fairy tale/nursery rhyme we were given was 'The tortoise and
the hare and our question was 'What's your favourite colour?'.

PLAN NO. 1

We chose, unanimously, to use the tortoise and the hare storyline as we thought the metaphore behindthe story had more promise in terms of making a music video with. Our initial idea was to create a music video that carried the moral of the story through two contrasting characters.

A brief story of the tortoise and the hare is a Hare who ridicules a slow-moving Tortoise. Tired of the Hare's boastful behaviour, the Tortoise challenges him to a race. The hare soon leaves the tortoise behind and, confident of winning, takes a nap midway through the race. When the Hare awakes however, he finds that his competitor, crawling slowly but steadily, has arrived before him.

Idea 1. Our first plan was to keep it simple and have two characters - the tortoise and the hare - running around our town in their respected costumes to a finishing line, where the tortoise wins. Using a mix of slow-motion and fast-paced shots we hoped to create a comedic video e.g. the tortoise pushes the hare over.

Idea 2. Another idea was to film a race between two characters - one slower, lazier and discouraged person (the tortoise) and another person who is energetic, caring, and ambitious (the hare) unknowingly competing in a race. They go about their daily business, cross-cutting between the two until they meet up at the end.
Idea 3. Our final draft was to stage an actual race complete with a crowd, stadium/school field and officials/referees to film before the race, slow motion through the race and then after using an upbeat song and many cameras to capture all of the moments. This is our favourite option out of the three using this basis of the 'race' for our music video.

CHANGE OF PLANS

Pretty quickly after going through and planning these ideas, we soon realised the scale of the
project that we would be taking on, if we did undertake one of these ideas. So, we reconvened and
asked ourselves weather we wanted to use this as our final project, and develop it further on or if
we wanted to do something else for our final film. This made us become aware of the fact that we
actually didn't like these ideas, and wanted to do something completely different for our final music
video. As a group, we don't like to waste time so we decided to come up with our final music video
idea now and slowly experiment with it, trying different ways we could do it, to lead up to our final
film.

Our Final Idea.
Firstly, we wanted to see what we thought of what our ideal music video would be. We imagined a
road trip with two sisters. After some expanding, mind-mapping and deliberation, we decided that it
would be almost montaged scenes throughout the road trip with only one or two lines of dialogue.
They could also end up at the concert of the respected band/music group, to bring in the idea of
lip-syncing perhaps.
